On Thursday, Apr. 24, 2014 just after 11 p.m. the Edmonton Police Service responded to a weapons complaint at a residence in the area of 67 Street and 101A Avenue.

Southeast Division patrol officers, Tactical Section, Canine Unit, Air-one, the Duty Officer and EMS responded to the address and set up a Command Post to safely resolve the situation.

The investigation revealed the residents were victims of a prank known as “swatting.”

Swatting is a false report given to 911 emergency services about a serious incident often involving weapons, and giving the illusion of lives at risk. Often these calls occur within the video gaming sphere and can make it difficult to find out where the call originates from.

“This is a crime of public mischief,” says Insp. Regan James. “These false calls can put a significant strain on emergency services and resources and affect other legitimate calls for service.”

Police continue to investigate.

This morning, Purina honoured fallen PSD Quanto’s service and bravery by inducting him into its 46th Annual Purina Animal Hall of Fame.

PSD Quanto died doing his job, after being stabbed in an altercation with a suspect in a criminal flight in October 2013.

Const. Matt Williamson, Quanto’s former handler, is in Toronto today to participate in the event, which will also honour four other animals for their actions taken to protect human lives.

“All of us at the Canine Section are honored by the recognition given to Quanto and Matt. We have had overwhelming support from the community and would like to thank everyone for their caring thoughts and words,” says Staff Sgt. Trevor Hermanutz of the EPS Canine Unit.

The Edmonton Police Service Traffic Section will be conducting commercial vehicle inspections along the city’s major roadways this week to help ensure safe commercial vehicle operation and safe roads for all motorists.

“It’s quite concerning that last year almost half of all the commercial vehicles we intercepted had failed inspection and were declared out of service,” says Sgt. Kerry Bates with the EPS Commercial Vehicle Inspection Detail.  “These big rigs and delivery trucks roll along next to us in traffic every day, and they may pose a risk to motorists and pedestrians.  It’s imperative that we hold the drivers and companies responsible for the safety of their vehicles, and prevent dangerous or deadly situations from arising.”

The spring compliance checks on commercial vehicles over 4,500 kg will be carried out in partnership with numerous provincial regulatory agencies on high-volume truck routes in Edmonton from May 6 to 8, 2014.

Safety inspectors will focus on overweight loads, faulty equipment, securement of loads, over-dimensional loads, dangerous or stolen goods, and the condition of drivers.

The fall 2013 commercial vehicle checks resulted in 275 vehicles being inspected, with 845 violations, 131 summonses, and 31 vehicles towed from the check points.  Only 30 per cent of vehicles passed inspection, 24 per cent required attention, and 46 per cent were declared out of service.

The EPS Traffic Section conducts commercial vehicle checks throughout the year in support of the Alberta Traffic Safety Plan.
