Citizens are everyday heroes when they call 911 to report suspected impaired drivers.

On March 9, 2014, a concerned motorist took the right steps and called police to report a possible impaired driver in the area of Whitemud Drive and 178 Street around 1:30 p.m. It was reported that the vehicle had just avoided hitting a curb and narrowly missed striking five vehicles while straddling two traffic lanes.  A police vehicle was dispatched and intercepted the vehicle in the area of 34 Avenue and 48 Street.

Police found the 43-year-old male driver exhibiting signs of impairment. A passenger in the front seat of the vehicle was a 7-year-old boy. When the driver stepped out from the vehicle, he failed to place the vehicle into park and it started moving forward but was stopped a short distance later.

A partially consumed bottle of liquor was recovered in the vehicle.  The driver of the vehicle was charged with impaired driving after providing blood alcohol readings over three times over the legal limit of 80mg%.

For the month of March 2014, there were 766 calls from the public to report suspected impaired drivers, which resulted in 248 intercepts, 57 impaired charges, 26 24-hour suspensions, and 53 letters sent to the registered vehicle owners because police could not intercept the vehicle.

So far in 2014, there have been a total of 1,969 calls into Curb the Danger, 611 intercepts, 168 impaired charges, 74 24-hour suspensions, and 158 letters sent to the registered vehicle owners.

Since its inception in October 2006, there have been a total of 63,894 calls into Curb the Danger, 21,637 intercepts, 6,093 impaired charges, 1,935 24-hour suspensions, and 9,748 letters sent to the registered vehicle owners.

The EPS provides updated Curb the Danger numbers each month.

Signs that could indicate an impaired driver:

  • unreasonably fast or slow speeds or inconsistent speeds;
  • frequent lane changes or swerving when passing;
  • ignoring traffic signals and signs;
  • approaching traffic signals and signs unreasonably fast or slow;
  • sitting at stop signs for long periods of time;
  • jerky starts and stops;
  • driving too close to the curbs and shoulders; hugging the edge of the road or straddling the center line;
  • driving at night without lights; or,
  • driving with the windows down in cold weather.

If you see a suspected impaired driver:

  • Call 9-1-1 and report the incident immediately. Under Bill 16 of the Distracted Driving legislation, drivers are permitted to use hand-held devices to contact 9-1-1 emergency services.
  • Take note of the location;
  • Report the license plate number as well as the vehicle description; and
  • If possible, keep the vehicle in sight, but do not attempt to chase the vehicle or break the law in order to stay close.

If a patrol car is not able to intercept the vehicle, the EPS may send a letter to the registered owner telling them that their vehicle was spotted being operated erratically.

The Edmonton Police Service is appealing to the public to assist in the identification of two males captured on surveillance video from a nearby gas station, who are persons of interest in the ongoing investigation into the vicious assault of a 41-year-old man back on March 22, 2014.

Investigators have been examining surveillance video (see photos below) from businesses nearby where the aggravated assault occurred, around 104 and 105 Street at 51 Avenue, at approximately 1:15 a.m. on that Saturday morning.

The complainant, who is alleged to have been randomly assaulted in a parking lot outside of a medical centre, regained consciousness late last week in hospital, where he remains, after suffering serious brain injuries.

Investigators are encouraging anyone that is able to identify the two males in the surveillance video image to contact the Edmonton Police Service at 780-423-4567or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm.

The victim sustained multiple head injuries, and was rushed to hospital by EMS paramedics, where he remains unconscious and in a medically induced coma.

Investigators continue to examine video surveillance in the area, which shows five intoxicated male suspects walking westbound along 51 Avenue by a nightclub near 103 Street. Three of the male suspects left the group and then travelled south and into the parking lot where the alleged aggravated assault occurred.

Police believe the suspects may have also attended a nearby fast food restaurant near 51Avenue and 104 Street at around 1 a.m., prior to the assault.

The Edmonton Police Service, with the assistance of the RCMP, continues to search for Anina Hundsdoerfer, 32, who was reported missing just over two weeks ago.

The search is focused on the dense forest area along Highway 734 (Trunk Road) between Rocky Mountain House and Nordegg where the missing woman’s 2005 Toyota Echo was located.  Despite the terrain, snow accumulation and weather conditions, RCMP dog teams were able to cover a significant amount of ground, but did not find any further evidence of the missing woman.  Police will search the area further weather permitting.

“We continue to ask anyone who may have seen Anina Hundsdoerfer or her 2005 Toyota Echo along the highway, or at some other location, to please contact police and let us know the details,” says Sgt. Neil Zurawell with the EPS Missing Persons Unit.  “Police, family and friends are all concerned for her safety and welfare, and would like to locate her as soon as possible.”

The circumstances leading to Hundsdoerfer’s disappearance have not yet been determined.  Her disappearance is out of character, and as a result, there are concerns for her well-being.

Anina Hundsdoerfer, 32, is described as Caucasian, approximately 5’9” tall, weighing approximately 160 lbs., with brown shoulder length hair, and blue eyes.  She may be wearing dark form-fitting pants, and eye glasses.  Hundsdoerfer operates a 2005 Toyota Echo, medium blue, two-door, with Alberta licence plate HUZ 936.

Anyone with information that may assist in locating Anina Hundsdoerfer, is asked to contact the Edmonton Police Service at 780-423-4567or #377 from a mobile phone, or the RCMP Rocky Mountain House Detachment at 403-845-2881.  Anonymous information can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm.

April 7 through 11 marks the 2014 Sexual Exploitation Week of Awareness in Edmonton. This year’s theme is Taking Action #YEGsecret Exposed!. As part of the event, Downtown Police Division’s Neighbourhood Empowerment Team (NET) is hosting a Hard Talk Panel on Rape Culture.

"NET is in the business of inviting folks to think about crime and safety from a community perspective," says Alec Stratford, NET social worker. "Tonight's event does just that; it asks all of us to reflect on sexual violence and exploitation from a broader perspective."

The panel brings together experts from the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton, the University of Alberta, Edmonton Multicultural Health Brokers, Edmonton Police Service and a local media outlet. Panel discussion will focus on how community can take action against sexual exploitation and the process by which rape culture is excused, normalized, and even encouraged by pervasive attitudes, norms, practices and media.

"Sexual Assault has an extremely negative effect on the community of Edmonton as a whole," says Staff Sergeant Shawna Grimes from Edmonton Police Service’s Sexual Assault Section. "It takes the involvement of the community to bring about better awareness and education around this violent crime."

The sold out event, being held at the Santa Maria Goretti Community Centre (11050-90 Street) between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. this evening, will be webcast at www.dlsfilm.com.

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a shocking overnight vandalism spree at St. Michael’s Cemetery in north Edmonton.

Approximately 66 monuments were damaged – with many tombstones toppled or shattered, urns destroyed, and many personal memorial items strewn across the grounds.  Damage to the monuments and costs for restoration are estimated between $50,000 and $75,000.

"This is a cowardly, disrespectful, and senseless crime," says Const. Liam Watson with EPS Northeast Division.  "There's no rhyme or reason to this mindless vandalism, which appears to be random, and possibly the work of several destructive individuals who had nothing better to do."

Staff at St. Michael's Cemetery, which is located at 138 Avenue and 82 Street, reported the vandalism to police on Wednesday, April 9, 2014.  The vandalism to the northwest corner of the grounds is believed to have occurred sometime between the evening of April 8 and the morning of April 9.

"Cemeteries are filled with heritage and are sacred sanctuaries for the living and the dead," says Marc Turgeon, Manager of St. Michael's Cemetery.  "Because they're the final resting place for our loved ones, their desecration can be devastating to the community.  It's truly saddening that families have to experience this kind of pain after already suffering the loss of a loved one."

St. Michael's Cemetery staff are in the process of assessing the damage, up-righting and repairing the stones wherever possible, and contacting the survivors of the deceased whose plots were violated.  The plots that were affected were purchased between 1965 and 1972.  If you wish to check on the status of a monument, please contact the St. Michael's Cemetery Office at 780-424-5493.

Police are asking those responsible, or anyone with knowledge of this crime, to come forward.   If you saw anything suspicious in the area, or have information that would be helpful to investigators, please contact the Edmonton Police Service by calling 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone.  Anonymous information can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm.

Online Crime Reporting celebrates one-year anniversary

Just one year after being released by the Edmonton Police Service, citizens have embraced technology and are using Online Crime Reporting (OCR) to file police reports.

Since launching OCR on April 8, 2013, the system has generated 35,324 visits to the website and 2,831 incident reports.

“Those numbers are fairly consistent with what other police agencies experience in their first year of operation,” says T/A Sgt.  Tony Paxton with EPS OCR.  “We’ve heard from citizens about how quick and convenient this is, and we fully expect the numbers to double in the next two to three years.”

OCR has a constant customer satisfaction survey that respondents are asked to complete to assist and guide the EPS with improving reporting systems.  The EPS strives to complete all reports within a 24-hour period.

OCR is currently being used by over 400 police agencies throughout North America, including two dozen in Canada, according to CopLogic, Inc., the California-based company that supplies the system.

The EPS OCR system allows citizens to report crimes online such as: Lost Property, Theft, Damage/Mischief to Property, Theft from Vehicle, and Damage/Mischief to Vehicle.  To report any other crimes, citizens must go to a station, or call 780-423-4567 or #377 from a cell phone. For a crime in progress or an emergency, please call 911.

Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section detectives have charged a man in connection with the fatal shooting of Mitchell Chambers, 23, which took place in the city’s southwest in 2008.

“This was a lengthy and extensive investigation that would not have concluded without the cooperation of witnesses who came forward and provided key information,” says Det. Dale Johnson with the EPS Homicide Section.  “Every case is unique and has its challenges, but, each homicide case is important and never closed until it is solved.”

At approximately 6:15 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, police received reports from neighbourhood residents that shots were fired in the area of 188 Street and 47 Avenue.  Responding officers found a truck parked on the side of the road with a lone male occupant who had been fatally wounded.

An autopsy by the Medical Examiner on Dec. 9, 2008, identified the victim as Mitchell Chambers, 23, and that the cause of death was gunshot wounds.

Witnesses reported that the victim drove his Dodge Dakota truck to a female friend’s residence to pick her up for a movie.  The suspect allegedly approached in a car and shot the victim while he sat waiting in his truck.  Detectives learned that the shooting was connected to a former relationship between the suspect and the female.

Joshua Dylan Petrin, 31, has been charged with second degree murder.  EPS detectives executed a warrant for the arrest of accused, who was being held on unrelated murder charges in the Regina Remand Centre, on Friday, April 11, 2014.  The accused will appear in court in Edmonton.

Police scoured the area, after receiving a report that a Grade 10 student from a nearby school had been threatened by a male carrying what appeared to be a handgun.

Downtown Division patrol members responded to the 118th Avenue area and arrested two male suspects at approximately 6:30 a.m., Saturday, April 5th, after receiving a complaint from a citizen that two males were spray painting numerous buildings throughout the area.

“There is absolutely nothing remotely artistic about tagging,” said Supt. Tony Harder, of the EPS Downtown Division. “This is the type of disorder that destroys neighbourhoods and promotes further criminality.”

“We hope this sends a clear message to the community that this sort of criminal behavior will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the highest degree.”

It was reported that two male suspects were seen tagging multiple buildings, light standards and a vehicle on 118 Avenue between 92 and 102 streets, during the early morning hours. Following further investigation, additional charges were laid against the two males for alleged tagging of buildings on 118 Avenue between 42 and 46 streets and along 84 Avenue between 99 and 109 streets on the city’s south side.

The Edmonton Police Service is asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect in a home B&E which occurred on April 15, 2014 at 150 Avenue and 122 Street.

It’s believed the B&E occurred sometime between the hours of 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on April 15, 2014. The suspect was caught on a neighbour’s home surveillance video walking away from the home just after 12 p.m., and headed north bound down the sidewalk. Numerous items were taken including jewelry, electronics, cash and a ring that has significant and sentimental meaning to the family.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian male, approximately 60 years old, of average height, slim build, with short to medium length grey/white hair. On the day of the B&E, the suspect was wearing blue coveralls with a sweater underneath.

The suspect may have also been riding a bike just before the B&E with no shocks, an odometer or pedometer on the handlebars, and a water bottle in the carrier. While on the bike, the male was also wearing a large jacket and one glove on his right hand. The suspect is pictured in the photo on a bike in the area of 151 Avenue and 121 Street. A video of the suspect on the bike can be seen at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9rmFKySzow

It’s believed the same suspect was in the area the day before, April 14, posing as an Enmax sales person. The suspect was wearing a large orange jacket, ball cap and glasses, and an “Enmax” name tag around his neck. Investigators confirmed with Enmax Energy that it has not used door-to-door sales for the past several years.

Anyone who has information about the identity and whereabouts of this man or information about the ring is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm.
