Autopsy results released in death of 59-year-old woman

Autopsy results released by the Edmonton Medical Examiner’s Office earlier today confirm that 59-year-old Barbara Nelson died as a result of blunt force trauma, with the manner of death being homicide.

Nelson died in hospital Friday evening, following a home invasion and altercation that occurred at around 8:50 p.m. on Jan. 18, 2019, in northeast Edmonton.


Homicide detectives continue to investigate the city’s latest homicide, and are encouraging anyone with information about this incident to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm.

Every file is evaluated on a case by case basis. The EPS decided to release the name of the deceased in this investigation for the following reasons: it serves an investigative purpose.

Background
Northeast patrol members responded to a residential address near 119 Avenue and 61 Street at approximately 8:50 p.m., Friday, Jan. 18, 2019.

Upon arrival, officers entered the home and discovered two complainants, a male and a female with undetermined injuries. The male complainant was also taken to hospital, where he remains in serious condition today, Monday, Jan. 21.

The suspects fled the residence prior to the arrival of police.
