ASIRT investigating officer-involved shooting

At approximately 2:30 p.m. this afternoon, Friday, Oct. 20, 2017, the Edmonton Police Service responded to the report of a residential break and enter in the area of 171 Street and 83 Avenue.

Upon arrival officers determined a 37-year-old male had barricaded himself within the residence. As a result, police secured the residence with the assistance of tactical section, and instructed residents in the vicinity to remain in their homes as a safety precaution.

 

At approximately 6:15 p.m., a confrontation occurred between the male suspect and officers outside the residence. Officers subsequently discharged their service weapons and struck the 37-year-old male. The male was treated and transported to hospital by EMS, where he remains in serious condition.

 

No EPS officers or community residents were harmed during this incident.

 

The EPS will not be providing further comment as the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has since taken the lead in this investigation.
