Shooting victim identified

The Edmonton Medical Examiner has confirmed the identity of Tuesday’s shooting victim to be Ibrahim Yousef Chehimi, 34.

Chehimi’s cause of death is a gunshot wound; the manner of death, homicide.

The 28-year-old shot in the arm during the incident was treated for a minor wound and released from hospital.

Homicide Section detectives continue to investigate the incident.

Background:

Downtown Division officers responded to a report of shots fired at 2:22 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, in a parking lot at 112 Street and 104 Avenue. Police found one male dead at the scene and a 28-year-old male with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the arm. 

Officers contained the scene and interviewed dozens of cooperative witnesses. The suspect – described as a tall black male – fled on foot.

The EPS Homicide Section is leading the investigation; the identity and age of the deceased has not yet been confirmed. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow morning.

Suspect identified; assist to locate

The Edmonton Police Service is asking for the public’s assistance in locating a suspect in the non-injury shooting that occurred Jan. 1, 2014 at the Ethiopian-Canadian Community Association.

Canada-wide warrants have been issued for Luqman Jama Osman, 24, for numerous firearms related offences. He should be considered armed and dangerous and not approached. Please contact police immediately.

At approximately 5 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014, Downtown Division officers responded to several reports of shots fired at a New Year's celebration attended by hundreds of people in the area of 105 Avenue and 115 Street.

Police discovered shots had been fired inside the building and outside on 115 Street. Investigations revealed an argument had broken out between several people before shots were fired. There were no injuries reported from the shooting.

Police searching for suspect in connection with purse snatchings

The Edmonton Police Service is searching for a male suspect believed to be responsible for three personal robberies this week, where female senior citizens are being targeted for their purses.

In the first incident, which occurred at approximately 8:20 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2013, a female senior citizen was approached while sitting in her vehicle in a grocery store parking lot on 100 Avenue and 170 Street on the city’s west end. The suspect told the complainant she had a broken rear tail light, and then stole the women’s purse from her vehicle, while the victim was surveying the alleged damage.

The second incident is alleged to have occurred at approximately 2:50 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2013, in a grocery store parking lot near Riverbend Square. It was reported that a female complainant was sitting in her vehicle preparing to leave, when a male suspect jumped inside the vehicle and began screaming at the complainant, while choking her with her scarf, before fleeing the scene.

The third incident also occurred on Wednesday, at approximately 7:20 p.m. in a hair salon near 105 Street and 51 Avenue. A male suspect followed an elderly woman into the salon and took her purse off a table, before fleeing the business.

In each case, the male suspect was believed to be sitting in a red pick-up truck, which was parked near the complainants’ vehicles.

The suspect is described as being a Caucasian male, 30-40 years of age, between 5’10” and 6” feet tall, and around 200 pounds. He has light brown/blonde hair, a broad face, pink complexion and was clean shaven. He was wearing a dark brown jacket a possibly a dark toque at the time of the robberies.

Police seek public’s assistance in locating Edmonton woman

The Edmonton Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a 17-year-old woman who was reported missing by a family member on Jan. 14, 2014. Lianna St. Jean was last seen at her residence in the area of 115 Street and 100 Avenue on Jan. 9, 2014.

“Family members and the EPS are concerned for her welfare, as it’s unusual for her to not contact family or friends for this length of time,” says Const. Shelley Pinch of Missing Persons Unit.

 

The Missing Persons Unit is investigating her disappearance, but has not been able to locate St. Jean.

 

St. Jean is 5’6” tall, weighs approximately 90 to 100 lbs., and has short blond hair.

Police locate missing teen girl

The Edmonton Police Service has located the 17-year-old female who was reported missing yesterday.

The teen was located last night as a result of the news release on her disappearance.  The EPS thanks all media outlets and the public for their assistance in this matter.

Elder Abuse Intervention Team investigating ‘disturbing’ case

The Edmonton Police Service’s Elder Abuse Intervention Team (EAITeam) recently responded to a case involving a 73-year-old woman living in deplorable conditions.

On Jan. 9, 2014, the EAITeam discovered the senior was living in a rental apartment where the kitchen ceiling had collapsed due to leaking water, which had precipitated the growth of black mold and electrical failures.

“The preliminary indications are that this elderly lady was suffering greatly, living in deplorable conditions,” said Const. Darren Smith, of the EPS EIATeam.”

The EAITeam transported the female complainant to hospital for observation. Alberta Health was contacted to inspect the residence, which was subsequently deemed unfit for human habitation. The landlord has since been ordered to repair the damages to the dwelling.

The EAITeam continues to work with partner agencies, including the Seniors Association of Greater Edmonton (SAGE), to find a new home for the complainant.  

EAIT Background:
While this investigation is focused on living conditions, the EAIT is also responsible for investigating cases of physical, emotional and psychological abuse against seniors. The EAIT is responsible for assessing information from investigative reports about seniors, aged 65 years and older, to determine if they are in an abusive situation or care, and if required, provide intervention.

The EAIT consists of a police constable and specialized community agency support from the City of Edmonton Community Services Department, Victorian Order of Nurses, Covenant Health and Catholic Social Services and the EPS Victim Services Unit.

New Year’s shooting suspect turns himself in

On Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, Luqman Jama Osman, 24, wanted for several numerous firearms related offences, turned himself in at downtown division headquarters, accompanied by his lawyer.

Last week, the Edmonton Police Service had asked for the public’s assistance in locating the suspect in a non-injury shooting that occurred Jan. 1, 2014 at the Ethiopian-Canadian Community Association.

Pedestrian struck, killed at marked crosswalk on 82 Avenue

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a fatal collision involving a pedestrian, which occurred at a marked crosswalk at 101 Street and 82 Avenue earlier this afternoon.

Southwest Division Patrol members responded to the collision at approximately 12:20 p.m. today, Monday, Jan. 27, 2014. Upon arrival, officers discovered a male in his mid-20s on the ground, after allegedly being struck by a vehicle.

Witnesses told police that a Chevy Cobalt was travelling northbound on 101 Street and was making a left-hand turn onto 82 Avenue, when it allegedly struck a male pedestrian who was walking southbound across the avenue at a marked crosswalk.

The male was treated by EMS on scene and transported to hospital where he later died.

Although the investigation remains preliminary at this time, police believe that neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the fatal collision. The EPS Major Collision Investigation Unit is handling the case.

Motorists travelling in the area are being asked to stay clear of 82 Avenue between 100 and 102 streets until further notice.

Suspect arrested, charged with defrauding victims of close to $320K

A 68-year-old man is facing multiple fraud charges for allegedly defrauding Albertans of close to $320,000, as part of an investment scheme.

Southwest Division detectives believe Gary Walker targeted female victims via online dating websites and males that he conducted business with between 2007 and 2010. The accused is alleged to have convinced five complainants from across Alberta, including Edmonton, Calgary and Wetaskiwin, to give him large sums of money under the false pretence of investing in the stock market.

It one such instance, Walker is alleged to have convinced a female victim that he met on a popular online dating site to give him $201,000 for the purpose of investing in stocks. It is alleged that the initial investment and dividends were never returned to the complainant.

The Calgary Police Service arrested Walker recently on fraud warrants. Gary Walker is charged with fraud over $5,000 (x5). He is also wanted on a fraud warrant in Brantford, Ont.

Public information and warning: Sexual Offender Released

In the interest of public safety, the Edmonton Police Service is issuing the following warning; Daniel Keith McAdam, 38, was recently released from an Edmonton institution after he completed a three year, two month sentence for sexual assault and escape lawful custody.

McAdam is considered by police to pose a risk of significant harm to the community.

The Edmonton Police Service is issuing this information and warning after careful deliberation of all related issues, including privacy concerns, in the belief that it is clearly in the public interest to inform the members of the community. McAdam will be residing in the Edmonton area and will be closely monitored by the Behavioral Assessment Unit of the Edmonton Police Service.

Police investigating violent assault and car theft outside strip mall

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a violent assault and car theft outside a popular west-end strip mall, and is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect and locating the stolen vehicle.

EPS West Division patrol officers responded to a report of vehicle being stolen from its owner at gunpoint in the area of 170 Street and 99 Avenue at approximately 7:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014.  It was reported that a 46-year-old woman was walking with a 7-year-old girl in the parking lot of a retail strip mall when she was approached by an unknown man.  The man allegedly pointed what appeared to be a handgun, and demanded the woman’s purse and car keys.  The woman and girl attempted to flee, but the man allegedly threw the woman to the ground and assaulted her.  Numerous bystanders intervened, but the man pointed his weapon at them and everyone ran for safety.  It was also reported that the unknown man ran towards a bystander’s vehicle that was left running nearby, and threatened the 56-year-old male owner of the vehicle with the gun, before stealing the car and fleeing the scene.

The suspect is described as an Aboriginal or Caucasian male, in his mid-twenties, with short brown hair and mustache with beard or goatee, between 5’8” and 5’10” in height, stocky build, wearing a black jacket with grey hoodie, blue jeans, and white running shoes.  He is believed to be in possession of a black handgun.

 

The stolen vehicle is described as a 2009 Toyota Venza, Alberta licence plate ZGG 418, blue in colour, similar to the photo included in this news release.

EPS West Division officers are actively investigating and coordinating with other EPS units to identify the unknown male and locate the stolen vehicle as soon as possible.  Police ask the public to call 911 if they see the suspect in the vehicle, and warn the public not to approach the suspect as he is considered armed and dangerous.

Three facing murder-related charges in connection with Remand death

Homicide Section investigators have charged three Remand Centre inmates with the murder of Curtis Dale Hill on Christmas eve, at the north-side correctional holding facility.

Grant Lewis, 31, and Ryan Prystay, 30, are charged with first degree murder and Matthew Anderson, 29, is charged with accessory after the fact to murder.

Autopsy results concluded that Hill, 34, died from injuries related to blunt force trauma and the manner in which he died was by homicide.

Background:

Homicide detectives were called out to the Remand Centre at approximately 8:50 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013. Witnesses told police an altercation occurred between inmates in a cell.

Paramedics were subsequently called out and treated the male victim, who was pronounced dead on scene shortly thereafter.

Criminal charges laid in Gateway Boulevard crash

The driver involved in a fatal single-vehicle crash along Gateway Boulevard last week is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant and facing numerous criminal charges.

Ryan Richard Wilneff, 28, from Nova Scotia, is arrestable for impaired operation causing death, dangerous driving causing death, possession of a controlled substance, and four breach of probation orders

The accused sustained non-life threatening injuries in the early morning crash that killed a 28-year-old male passenger on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014.

Wilneff walked away from the hospital and his whereabouts are unknown. The Edmonton Police Service Major Collision Investigation Section expanded Wilneff’s warrant for arrest from provincial to Canada-wide due to the severity of the charges.

Background:

A 28-year-old male was driving a Jeep Wrangler northbound on Gateway Boulevard at 2 a.m. on Jan. 22, 2014, when the vehicle reportedly veered off the road between 60 and 61 Avenue, knocking down a light standard, continuing through a parking lot and striking several billboards and trees in its path, before colliding head-on into the cement/brick wall of a business.

Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors.

The death was the second traffic fatality in Edmonton in 2014.

EPS Northeast Division patrol officers located the vehicle that was stolen during an assault in a west-end strip mall on Jan. 28.

The Toyota Venza was located in the area of 149 Avenue and 66 Street at approximately 5 a.m. this morning (Jan. 30, 2014).  The vehicle has been seized for forensic testing.

West Division detectives continue to investigate and are asking the public to call 911 if they see the suspect or have any information about his whereabouts. The suspect should not be approached as he is considered armed and dangerous.

Additional sex charges laid against Edmonton man for pool incidents

An Edmonton man charged with two counts of sexual assault early this month is now facing additional sex-related charges for two incidents that are alleged to have occurred in the summer of 2009.

It was reported that Christopher Herodek, 48, inappropriately touched two, pre-teen females who swam by the accused at north and west-end recreation centre pools in the summer of 2009.

Herodek is charged with two counts each of sexual assault and sexual interference.

Investigators laid similar charges against Herodek earlier this month, for two incidents that are alleged to have occurred on Dec. 22, 2013 and Dec. 23, 2013.

Pedestrian succumbs to injuries sustained from Jan. 22nd collision

An elderly man has succumbed to injuries sustained after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross 97 Street on Jan. 22, 2014.

It was reported that at approximately 12:45 p.m. on Jan. 22, a 94-year-old male stepped off the west curb and attempted to cross 97 Street just south of 107A Avenue.

The pedestrian was then allegedly struck by a south-bound vehicle and subsequently fell to the ground and hit his head.

He was treated by EMS paramedics on scene and taken to hospital, where he remained until succumbing to his injuries earlier today, Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014.

The file is being examined by the EPS Major Collision Investigation Unit, though charges are not anticipated, as investigators believe the male was not attempting to cross 97 Street at a marked crosswalk.

Woman pulled from driver seat; vehicle stolen

Downtown Division officers are investigating a report of a late night car theft and assault (carjacking) involving three male suspects and a female driver of a grey Ford.

The woman, 45, was alone in her vehicle while exiting a parking lot in the area of 106 Avenue and 102 Street around 11:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014. It was reported that three male strangers, believed to be in their early 20s, approached her vehicle and opened the car doors. The woman was allegedly pulled out of the vehicle from the driver seat before the three men – whose faces were hidden behind scarves – jumped in the vehicle and drove away.

The vehicle is described as a grey four-door, 2006 Ford Freestyle, plate HUX 341. Although traumatized, the driver was not physically injured.  

The incident is the second theft of vehicle using violence in three days; however the two are not believed to be related.

“We see a lot of stolen vehicles throughout the year, but very few carjackings,” says Downtown Division Acting Staff Sgt. Michael Hickey. “When a life is put at risk during the process of a crime, the stakes increase dramatically, and the criminal consequence jumps from theft to robbery.”

The Edmonton Police Service has arrested a “person of interest” in connection with a Jan. 28th violent assault in a west-end strip mall.

Northeast Division members converged on a residential address and arrested a male at approximately 4:30 p.m. this afternoon.

Investigators continue to interview the individual, who remains in custody.

No further information is being released at this time.

Charges pending against suspect for Jan. 28th violent assault

Charges are pending against a 29-year-old male in connection with a Jan. 28th violent assault in a west-end strip mall.

Northeast Division members converged on a location and arrested a male at approximately 4:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2014.

The suspect will remain in custody until charges can be sworn before a justice, either over the weekend or early next week.

Further details will be released at that time.

The Edmonton Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a grandmother and her granddaughter, who went missing Feb. 1, 2014, at approximately 11 a.m.

It was reported that Darlene Ann Dickie, 49, and her granddaughter, Kyra Maidment, 8, left their residence near 101 Street and 111 Avenue on Saturday morning. Dickie was driving a black 2012 Ford Escape at the time with the Alberta licence plate number BHC3657.

The pair failed to return home, prompting the family to contact police at approximately 8 p.m. Saturday evening.

Kyra Maidment, 8, is described as (see photo below)

  • 3’0” tall
  • 65 pounds
  • Shoulder length brown hair.
  • Wearing a black and white longer shirt with ruffles at the bottom and black leggings.
  • Brown fur jacket and black boots with grey fur lining
  • NOTE: Kyra also has a brain injury, and communicates with the use of an iPad.

Darlene Dickie, 49, is described as (see photo below):

  • 5'4" tall
  •  130 pounds
  • Long reddish, blond hair.
  • She wears glasses.
  • Wearing at navy blue winter jacket
  • Grey/black pants.

 

Investigators do not believe the incident is criminal in nature, at this time.
