As part of Crime Prevention Week, the EPS is pleased to announce that citizens are now able to log on to their computer and report a crime online as an alternative to going to a police station or calling police.

Starting Wednesday, May 15, citizens will be able to report certain crimes online.  Reportable crimes include; Lost Property, Theft, Damage/Mischief to Property, Theft from Vehicle and Damage/Mischief to Vehicle. Citizens can access Online Crime Reporting and view reporting criteria via the EPS Web Site.

For any other type of crimes, citizens must go to a station, call 9-1-1, or 780-423-4567 (#377 from a cell phone).

“Reporting these types of crimes online is quick and convenient,” says Insp. Greg Alcorn, Information Management Branch.  “You no longer have to drive to a station or wait for an officer to arrive and take your report. It takes hours off the process time and it’s truly virtual policing. The hope is that more people will report crimes because it’s so easy and accessible.”

Since April 8, 2013, when the Edmonton Police Service soft launched online reporting, 133 files were received.  This five week launch allowed EPS to troubleshoot potential issues.

Online crime reporting is currently being used by 338 police agencies throughout North America, including 14 in Canada, according to CopLogic, Inc., the California-based company that supplied the system.
