Police and fire cadets from Edmonton and Calgary are participating in the first of its kind Police & Fire Cadet Challenge Games on May 8th, 9th and 10th at Birch Bay Ranch near Sherwood Park.

These four cadet groups will spend the weekend experiencing new challenges, and best of all, making new friends. Promoting leadership, teamwork and camaraderie among cadets is the purpose of the challenge event, and a variety of competitive activities are planned over the weekend to achieve these goals.

“This event gives us an opportunity to work together and learn from each other,” said Leeanne Harvey, Edmonton Police Youth Educator. “Our cadet programs operate very differently in some respects, and an event like this raises the bar for everyone because we all go home with new ideas about how to do things.

Some of the activities planned for the weekend include: police and fire-related challenges; high ropes; orienteering; archery; and an extreme obstacle course (car push, dummy rescue, wall challenges).

The event kick-off will take place on Friday, May 8th at 7:00 p.m. at Birch Bay Ranch with greetings from Edmonton Police Service, Calgary Police Service, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services and Calgary Fire Department. Cadets will be presented with an event t-shirt at the kick-off, and will participate in a tug o’ war as an ice-breaker.

“This idea of a cadet challenge is truly inspiring,” said Ashton Sykes, a firefighter with Calgary Fire Department. “Bringing these four groups together and blending their skills can only encourage personal growth in all of them. I am without a doubt excited about the cadet challenge and can’t wait to see the bonds these cadets will build throughout the weekend.”

Members of the media are invited to attend the event kick-off on Friday evening at Birch Bay Ranch (directions and site map are attached) as well as any of the activities taking place over the weekend.
