An allegedly stolen Lexus IS330 crashed into a tree and caught fire Saturday morning, requiring police officers to pull the driver from the burning vehicle.

On Saturday, May 5, 2013, at 12:15 a.m., Edmonton Police Service Downtown Division officers attempted to stop a Lexus in the area of 95 Street and Jasper Avenue. The Lexus allegedly slowed then drove off at excessive speeds, leading police to quickly terminate the pursuit and lose visual contact of the suspect vehicle.

The vehicle continued westbound on Jasper Avenue and collided head on with a large tree on the north side of Jasper Avenue between 102 and 103 Street.

Police came across the collision moments later and observed an unresponsive lone occupant in the driver’s seat. Two officers extracted the male as the vehicle burst into flames. Edmonton Fire Rescue extinguished the blaze and prevented further damage.

The driver was treated on scene by EMS and transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The EPS Major Collision Investigative Unit is leading the investigation. Charges are pending against a 34-year-old male.
