Police have received an increase in reported residential break and enters on the south side and more specifically within recent weeks, the Parkallen neighbourhood. These break-ins have occurred primarily during day-time hours, when residents are away from their homes.
“There have been a variety of methods used by the person(s) responsible, and investigators have few descriptions or details to work with,” said Det. Cal Mah. “However, it is possible that the culprits are familiar with the neighbourhood and may have been watching the area prior to committing the break-ins.”
The EPS is warning Parkallen residents to be wary of any suspicious activity and of any strangers in the area. Investigators are also reminding residents that the sooner an incident is reported to EPS, the better the chances of police apprehending those responsible.
The EPS is asking for assistance from the public and reminding everyone that there are steps they can take to avoid becoming a B&E target:
- Remember to keep all of your doors locked. This includes any back alley garages and/or sheds you may have on your property. Deadbolts are considered much sturdier than knob locks or door chains. Consider purchasing a deadbolt for your doors.
- Consider having an alarm system installed in your home. If this is something you are not considering or it may not be in your budget, seek out alarm stickers or other warning messages, such as ‘Beware of Dog’, which can be placed on your door.
- Consider purchasing a timer to place on lights in your residence, allowing them to turn on automatically at various times.
- If budget and time allows, consider installing motion lights on your garage and near the doors to your house.
- Speak to your neighbours about what is happening in your community. Keep an eye on their property as well as your own.
