The Marine Unit will be at the 50th Street Capilano boat launch on Sunday, June 2 starting at 11 a.m. to educate citizens and ensure they have the necessary safety equipment on their motorized or human-powered watercrafts before heading out on the river. Edmontonians who are interested in learning more about using our river safely are welcome to come out and chat with police.
“We will be interacting with the public to ensure everyone who is going to be enjoying the river is planning to do so safely,” says Const. Derek Jones with the EPS Marine Unit. “This will include checking for impairment, noise levels, licences and safety equipment, but we’re also there to help educate people about water levels, hazards and logistics that can help them get the most out of their river experience.”
Officers will patrol 48 km of the North Saskatchewan River by jet boat and Sea-Doo this weekend and during events throughout the summer to ensure the safety of river users.
“The North Saskatchewan River is a much-loved feature of our city, and if we all enjoy it responsibly, we can keep it safe and accessible for everyone,” says Const. Jones.
Citizens are encouraged to visit the Safe Boating Guide available on the Transport Canada website for a complete list of boat safety regulations, and Environment Canada to check weather and water levels.
