Clayton Thomas Berard, 38, was arrested on the evening of March 28, 2019. Berard is charged withfirst degree murder and breach of recognizance(x2) in relation to the stabbing death of a 48-year-old female on the morning of March 28, 2019.
Berard is also charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and breach of recognizance(x2) in relation to the stabbing of a 49-year-old male on the evening of March 28, 2019.
Every file is evaluated on a case by case basis. The EPS has decided not to release the name of the deceased in this investigation for the following reasons: it does not serve an investigative purpose and the EPS has a duty to protect the privacy rights of victims and their families.
Background
At approximately 7:15 a.m. on March 28, 2019, police responded to the area of 100 Street and 105A Avenue on a report of a stabbing. When officers arrived, they discovered an injured woman lying on the ground. The female was treated and transported to hospital by EMS, where she was pronounced deceased.
At approximately 7:10 p.m. on March 28, 2019, officers responded to the report of a stabbing in the area of 101 Street and 105 Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located an injured 49-year-old male. EMS treated and transported the male to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The male was later declared to be in stable condition.
Autopsy results released by the Edmonton Medical Examiner on Friday, March 29, 2019, confirmed the 48-year-old femaledied as a result of stab wounds, and the manner of death is homicide.
