The Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section has charged a 29-year-old male with second-degree murder in connection to the 2016 death of an infant male child.

It was reported to police that on July 5, 2016, a six-month-old baby boy was left with the accused, a friend of the family, to babysit the infant child, while the child’s mother was at work.

Upon arriving home, the mother noticed her baby appeared to be in medical distress, and paramedics were called, who treated and transported the baby to hospital.

The infant child succumbed to injuries consistent with head trauma two days later on July 7, 2016, in hospital.

After a lengthy investigation, and in consultation with the Crown Prosecutor’s Office, EPS Homicide investigators issued Canada-wide warrants on Feb. 15, 2019, for the arrest of Darren James Gagnon.

Gagnon, 29, turned himself in to police at the RCMP detachment in Grand Forks B.C., on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2019, and was returned to Edmonton and taken into EPS custody yesterday, Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2019.

The accused was scheduled to appear in court sometime today, Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2019.

Every investigation is evaluated on a case by case basis. The EPS has decided not to release the name of the deceased in this investigation for the following reasons: it does not serve an investigative purpose.
