Just before 3 p.m. today (July 20, 2013) West Division officers responded to a report of a disturbance at Belmead Community Hall, in the area of 182 Street and 90 Avenue.

When officers arrived they were faced with a large group of protesters in the parking lot next to the hall, where a meeting involving approximately 40 people was taking place inside at the time.

As officers attempted to speak with protesters, they were surrounded by the large group, and immediately called for back up.

Upwards of 45 EPS officers from all Divisions were deployed to the scene to ensure the safety of residents in the area, and that of the meeting attendees and protesters. It was determined that approximately 110 men and women were participating in the protest.

Around 5:30 p.m. the meeting attendees were evacuated from the hall by patrol officers and protesters left the area shortly after in a peaceful manner.

There were no arrests or charges laid at the scene, but charges are pending against one male protestor upon further investigations being completed.
